Garage door remote not working? We’ll get you back in

Dead remote, keypad locked to the last owner’s code, or a door that only opens up close — most remote and keypad problems are a five-minute fix. We reprogram, sync, and replace, same day.

A garage door remote or keypad that suddenly stops is almost always a quick fix — a dead battery, lost programming, or a range problem — not a reason to replace the whole opener. We reprogram, sync, and replace remotes and keypads across Geneva and the Fox Valley, usually on the same visit.

Why your remote or keypad stops working

The everyday culprits are a worn-out battery, programming wiped by a power outage or opener reset, weak range from a damaged antenna or nearby LED-bulb interference, worn buttons on an old remote, or a keypad still set to someone else’s code. Rolling-code openers can also lose their sync with a remote and simply need to be paired again.

Remote, or opener? How we tell

The fastest test is the wall button. If it opens the door but the remote does not, the problem is in the remote or the opener’s receiver — not the motor. If nothing works at all, we look at the opener itself. That one check saves you from paying to fix the wrong thing, which is exactly the kind of upsell we refuse to run.

What you can safely try first

Remotes are safe to work on, so start simple: swap in a fresh battery, make sure you are pressing the right button, and check the opener’s antenna wire is hanging freely, not tucked up or broken. Many openers let you re-pair a remote with the Learn button on the motor head. If it still will not hold a signal, or you are locked out, give us a call.

A note on security

When you move in, share a code, or lose a remote, change it. Modern openers use rolling codes, but a stored keypad PIN or an old remote left in an unlocked car is still a real risk. We reset codes and purge old devices so the only things that open your door are the ones you hold. Call (630) 937-3540 for same-day remote and keypad service across the Fox Valley.

Remote & keypad FAQs

Garage door remote questions

Why did my garage door remote suddenly stop working?
The most common cause is a dead battery, followed by lost programming after a power surge or an opener reset. A fresh battery or a quick reprogram brings most remotes back in a couple of minutes.
My wall button works but the remote doesn’t. What’s wrong?
That points to the remote or the opener’s radio receiver, not the motor. Usually the remote just needs a new battery or reprogramming; occasionally the receiver board in the opener is failing and needs service.
Can you replace a lost garage door remote?
Yes. We match a compatible or universal remote to your opener and program it. If you are worried about the lost one, we erase all old codes from the opener so it can no longer open your door.
The keypad won’t work since I moved in. How do I fix it?
The previous owner’s code is still stored. We reset the keypad to a new PIN you choose and clear any remotes you were not given, so only your devices open the door.
My remote only works when I’m close to the door. Why?
Short range usually means a weak battery, a damaged antenna wire hanging from the opener, or interference from nearby LED or CFL bulbs. We check the antenna and receiver and restore full-driveway range.
How much does remote or keypad service cost?
It is one of our quickest, lowest-cost calls and is often handled on the same visit as other work. See our pricing page for starting prices, or call and we will quote it before we begin.
